Cortinarius (Telamonia) obtusus Fr. Stumpfer Wasserkopf Cap 1–4cm across, conical to bell-shaped, then expanded and umbonate, reddish-brown and striate when moist drying ochre to light tan, sometimes splitting at the margin. Stem 40–80 x 4–10mm, often spindle-shaped towards the base, ochre-tan covered in white fibres; cortina white. Flesh ochre-tan. Smell strongly of radish. Gills ochre-cinnamon then cinnamon-brown. Spore print rust. Spores elliptic, 6–8.5 x 4.5–5.5µ. Habitat conifer woods, especially pine. Season spring to autumn. Occasional. Edibility Suspect – avoid as many Cortinarius contain toxins. Distribution, America and Europe. |
